Why convert NEF to JPG?
NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) is Nikon's RAW format, and one of the longest-lived in the industry — Nikon has been writing NEF files since the D1 in 1999, and the format lives on today in the Z-series mirrorless bodies. A NEF file stores 12- or 14-bit sensor readings along with Nikon's metadata for white balance, Picture Control and lens data.
Nikon shooters accumulate NEFs by the thousand because the format is excellent for editing, but painful to share: stock Windows installations (outside Nikon's own NX Studio), most content platforms and every messaging app need a JPEG or PNG instead.
ShiftRaw converts NEF to JPG directly in the browser. The LibRaw engine applies your camera's recorded white balance, processes the full-resolution frame, and outputs a clean file — your photos are never uploaded to any server.
Best for: JPG is the universal choice: every device, browser, app and platform displays it, and at 90%+ quality the compression is invisible. A 45-megapixel RAW frame converts to a 5–10 MB JPG that uploads anywhere. For web and client delivery it remains the sensible default — start here unless you specifically need transparency (PNG) or the smallest possible files (WebP).
