Why convert CR3 to JPG?

CR3 is Canon's current RAW format, introduced in 2018 with the EOS M50 and used by every EOS R-series mirrorless camera since — the R5, R6, R7, R50, R100 and the rest. It replaces the older TIFF-based CR2 with a modern ISO Base Media File Format container (the same family as MP4), which enabled Canon's smaller C-RAW compressed variant.

If you shoot an EOS R body you already know the friction: a full-frame CR3 from an R5 is 45 megapixels and roughly 45 MB, and while Adobe apps and Canon's DPP handle CR3 well, plenty of websites, chat apps, client portals and older laptops simply refuse it.

Converting CR3 to JPG with ShiftRaw happens entirely inside your browser — the decoding is done by a WebAssembly build of LibRaw, the camera's white balance is applied automatically, and your full-resolution photos never leave your machine.

Best for: JPG is the universal choice: every device, browser, app and platform displays it, and at 90%+ quality the compression is invisible. A 45-megapixel RAW frame converts to a 5–10 MB JPG that uploads anywhere. For web and client delivery it remains the sensible default — start here unless you specifically need transparency (PNG) or the smallest possible files (WebP).

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between CR3 and C-RAW?
C-RAW is a compressed flavor stored inside a CR3 file. A standard CR3 from a 45 MP R5 is about 45 MB; the same frame as C-RAW is roughly 27 MB with minimal visible difference. Both decode identically in ShiftRaw — just drop the file in and convert.
Can I convert CR3 to JPG without Lightroom or DPP?
Yes. ShiftRaw decodes CR3 in your browser using a WebAssembly build of LibRaw, so there is nothing to install and no subscription to buy. Lightroom remains the tool for developing and cataloguing, but for a quick, full-quality JPG export this is faster.
Why are my CR3 files so large?
Modern Canon sensors are 24–45 megapixels and RAW stores every photosite at 14-bit depth before compression. Large files are the price of latitude in editing. Converting to JPG typically shrinks an R5 frame from ~45 MB to 5–10 MB while keeping web-sharp quality.
Is CR3 going away?
Not soon. It is Canon's only current RAW format across both EOS R and EOS M lines. Canon has not announced a successor, so a CR3 workflow — including converting to JPG for delivery — will stay relevant for years.
JPG or PNG — which should I choose?
JPG for photos: smaller files, universally supported, visually lossless at high quality. PNG for graphics that need transparency, screenshots, or when you must not lose a single pixel. For photographic work, JPG at 92% is the right call 95% of the time.
Is there a file size or batch limit?
No hard limits. Files are processed one by one entirely on your device, so the practical ceiling is your machine's memory - a 100 MP medium-format RAW decodes comfortably on any modern computer. Large batches simply queue and run sequentially.
